The Friday Job Report - Week 5
2026 - Week 5
And the upgrade will have to wait, as the storm was much worse than I had hoped, and I spent all last week shoveling snow. Now that I’m temporarily in Houston, in 60-degree weather, I’ve been able to make a lot of progress on updating the My Met Job platform. I’m hopeful it will be done and live in the next two weeks.
Some notes about Interviews
The pre-interview. Sometimes, you might get an interview before the interview process, where they vet you for the right qualifications for the role. These types of interviews might occur if you are overqualified for a position or if you are applying for an international role. I’ve had to do these, and it’s more about learning about you and why you applied.
Another experience you might encounter when applying for jobs is the recruitment agency that was hired by the company to find candidates for the role. When you apply, you are sending your resume and cover letter to an agency. They review your qualifications, and they may set up a phone or virtual meeting to see if you should be added to the candidate pool. Just know that the next step in this process is a meeting with the actual company, and it could be with the meteorology team.

Operational Meteorology

Pay: $54,200 – $72,000, up to $75,000 CAD in Ottawa

Preferred:
-
Experience with GIS software, coding (Python, SQL, VBA), data analytics tools (Power BI, Tableau), or AI applications.
-
Previous operational forecasting experience or willingness to work offshore on platforms and ships.
Who Should Apply?
I worked in St. John’s, Newfoundland, for this exact position, even though the name of the company was different. If you want to experience some of the most extreme weather you will ever see, then you should choose St. John’s. You can also stay closer to civilization and choose Ottawa or Montreal.
The job is bilingual because there are clients in Quebec and in New Brunswick, which is bilingual. When I was there, I had flashcards with French weather terminology, and it really didn’t work, so you should know some French. Also, the other little part you should pay attention to is the last preferred, which says you should be willing to work on offshore platforms. While we had clients that were offshore platforms, I didn’t have to go out there. If you don’t mind heights, hurricane-force winds, freezing spray, and 30-meter swells, then you will have no problem.
Lastly, if you want to see a ton of snow, as I posted in last week’s job report, then you should choose Newfoundland. Plus, they have great hiking, views, and more moose than people.
Final Thoughts
Writing a resume and cover letter is almost an art. You could just throw something out there or even have AI write the whole thing for you. It may work, but it also may backfire. Once you get a resume that lands an interview, you should keep it and just tweak it for different jobs, but otherwise run with it as long as you can. I talk about this a lot with the meteorologists I coach through My Met Job.
The cover letter is definitely harder. I once was accused by a company of using AI because my cover letter was just that good. I don’t use AI to write any content. The content comes from me, and I only consider AI to fix the flow of my thoughts, and also fix some of the grammar.
When you craft a cover letter, you should have a good idea of what the company does and how they are going to use the meteorologist. This can help you connect what you know with what they do, and this is what gets you in the door. Not all the time, but it has worked for me throughout my career.
Need help with your resume? My Met Job offers reviews based on the same approach that helped me land 40+ interviews in a year. Real-world advice from someone who’s done it.
Good luck with the job hunt, the career exploration, the interview prep, and landing your dream job!
